Board of trustee at Darrow School

Message from Principal

Dear parents, students and friends. I wanted to extend my warmest welcome to you!

As someone who graduated from Darrow School – a small, private boarding school in NY – I want to share with you some of my experience there and why I want to bring its ideology/curriculum to China. I always begin with a short story. When I was in a public middle school in Beijing, I was seen as a bad student. I liked outdoor activities, even just lying under the sun out on fields made me much happier than being in crowded classrooms. I always had accompanies, a whole bunch of them would skip classes and follow me to the field or to nearby markets. I was always under penalty as a result of being this “leader of bad behavior”. When I went to Darrow, they looked at this with a “glass half-full” perspective. I was appointed to be captain, dorm prefect, a committee lead, which all evolves around my ability to influence others to follow. That is one outstanding feature they didn’t kill, and worked with me to refine and develop it. This is amongst many things that Darrow did for me, and only for me, which is something I can live with for the rest of my life.

The values we believe in creating global citizens lays within the larger skill-set and not just book knowledge, which is essential for student’s successfulness in any field of interest, in any country. Such as innovation, collaboration, leadership, self-discipline and communication. We believe everyone has something unique to offer, any there no bad student, only student who are lost and need to be found. One thing I always ask on faculty interview is: “what does a bad student look like?” When someone responds: “a bad student does not bring his or her book to class, never finishes homework on time, and can’t sit still”. Well, I then wonder, why does a student behave in such a way? Is the homework too hard or too easy so the student is not capable or interested in it? If a student can’t sit still, well perhaps standing is the right way to go? I believe that in any abnormalities lays the possibility of outstanding features, true talents that differentiate this student from all others, just like it happened to me with my leadership skill which later led me to found a start-up, and open this school.

For every class we hold, there are no more than 15 students. They are discussion-based, and students’ feedback is highly valued. If they can’t express their opinion, then how are they ever going to be able to raise their voice to change the world we live in? We want to provide each and every single one of them with the right amount of comfort and challenge, making sure they have what it takes to succeed in whatever areas of interest they want to pursue.

As my favorite teacher Simon (who is now Darrow’s principal) once told me, students are like seeds, whether it will be a palm tree, an apple tree or oak tree, they already know. What we, as educators and parents ought to do, is just to provide the sun, water, nutrients, give enough love and patience, and they will grow to have what they define as valuable, successful, meaningful life.

Someone once said “Education is like a tree shaking a tree, a cloud to promote a cloud, a soul awakening another soul.”

I could not express my thoughts better.
